Antonio Conte: Stay or Go?

Zack Mason

Despite Tottenham Hotspur’s recent league victory at home against the defending champions, Manchester City, a number of fans have been calling for Antonio Conte, current Spurs manager, to be sacked.

However, the number of fans wanting Conte to be relieved of his duties has decreased significantly after Tottenham Hotspur won all three of their last three games, one of them being an away win to Preston in the FA cup.

The calls for 'Conte out' came mostly after their defeat to Arsenal at home and to Manchester City away at the Etihad, where Spurs were leading 2-0 at half time and City came back to win the game 4-2 in a woeful second half from Spurs. It was defensive as well as goal-keeping errors that lead to goals being conceded. Some fans have felt like they have not seen the free flow attacking football promised by chairman Daniel Levy in 2021.

Therefore, is sacking Conte the answer? In my opinion, it is definitely not the answer. Antonio Conte has given Tottenham its best ever Premier League start to the season. Spurs are in the Champions League round of 16, facing AC Milan away next week. They are also still in the FA Cup.

Previously, even though the board appointed world-class manager Jose Mourinho, success never came. For a successful manager with a win rate of 85% in finals, Levy sacked him before the Carabao cup final, which Spurs ended up losing. So… if the problem at the club is not the manager, where exactly does the problem lie?

Is it Daniel Levy and the club's board for being in-charge of the club for twenty

years, and having just one league cup to their name? Or are they not investing as much as they need to? Spurs have one of the world's best stadiums, one of the world's best training grounds and they hired one of the world's most successful managers.

Instead of learning from the mistakes the club made, they are slipping backwards. Arsenal showed patience in their project and manager, and results are obvious. Newcastle have not even really begun to spend a lot of money and yet they sit above Tottenham. Manchester United and Erik ten Hag are moving in the right direction. Chelsea spent a ridiculous sum of money in January, and have so many new signings.

Conte is not the problem. He never was. I’ll never be #ConteOut, because he is our best choice right now. It’s the board that needs to change, as it has been for a very long time.

As former manager Mauricio Pochettino once said, “When you talk about Spurs, everyone says you have an amazing house but you need to put in the furniture.” And I couldn’t agree more.
