Harry Kane has scored his 266th goal for Tottenham to get a crucial Premier League win for Tottenham in their top four hunt.
The atmosphere around Spurs has not exactly been glamorous based on the previous two results which accentuated the current issues at the club. It was a freezing Monday night at Craven Cottage, where Fulham had a chance to leapfrog the visitors with a win.
Tottenham had a meeting mid-week with Antonio Conte to discuss going back to basics which was confirmed by Harry Kane in the post-match interview with Sky Sports. The team performance was one which resonated the basics which the Italian installed when he first joined to help Tottenham get back on track.
Fulham barely created a truly dangerous chance in the full 90 minutes with exception to the odd Aleksandar Mitrovic header and a Harrison Reed half-volley. A credit to Tottenham’s defence tonight and particularly Emerson Royal who has particularly been a liability in the team. The Brazilian was intelligent tonight, made some important clearances and tackles and was well-rounded.
Harry Kane deserves his flowers for another remarkable goal, which won Tottenham the game. He spun Tim Ream and finished astonishingly past Bernd Leno into the right-hand corner. It was classic Kane and epitomised his quality and greatness for Spurs.
The prolific striker is now matched with Spurs legend Jimmy Greaves on 266 goals for the club. Discussions should be beginning about the Englishman being Tottenham’s greatest ever player despite the lack of trophies. The number of times where he has single-handedly carried the club on his back is uncountable.
Spurs completely controlled the second half, which was utterly composed. The 1-0 lead was undoubtedly fragile, but Spurs were not overcommitting or made any ridiculous mistakes. Hugo Lloris will be delighted to keep a clean sheet after a couple of shaky performances.
Antonio Conte let out an almighty celebration in front of the away end at full time, which was probably relieving for the Italian. He admitted to a difficult period in his life after the passing of a few friends. He has questioned his job but a win will do a great amount for him.
Tottenham are going into a busy and important period now. At the weekend Spurs visit Deepdale to face Preston in the FA Cup before a second date with Manchester City at home. On Valentines Day, Spurs visit Milan for a crucial Champions League tie.
It is a congested fixture list upcoming for Spurs, but tonight’s win will certainly lift the morale of the players and the club.
