Spurs 1-0 Man City - Match Ratings

Daniel Madgin

After a fantastic performance yesterday, it is time to digest and decide who performed well, who was slightly disappointing and how step-in Stellini got on.

In case you are unaware of the ratings system, it is rated as follows:

0-2 - Dreadful performance, consists of mistakes and errors and costs us the game.

2.5-4 - Below par, may have made a mistake or two or showed nothing worthy in the game.

4.5-6 – Average, offered nothing special but completed a solid shift and minimised mistakes.

6.5-7.5 – Offered some effort and delivered something to the team in getting a result.

8-9.5 – A great performance and a large contributor to the result with a goal, assist or clean sheet.

10 – A perfect performance, no mistakes and carried the team to a win. Rarely given out. (E.g., Kane vs Man City)

Goalkeepers and Defenders:

Hugo Lloris – 7.5

After a tricky few weeks, this is a great clean sheet for the captain. Did not have to make any outstanding saves but offered great distribution and kept the defence well marshalled.

Emerson Royal – 9

His greatest Spurs performance so far – defensively amazing against Jack Grealish. Made plenty of intelligent decisions and did not rush anything in attack. I wonder, did Pedro Porro motivate him?

Cristian Romero - 8

Great performance, despite the red card (which I believe was a necessary challenge). He slid into Haaland early on which inserted fear into the striker. Made some great challenges, stepped out well and contributed to the clean sheet. Rolls Royce.

Eric Dier – 7.5

When Eric Dier appears calm and composed, he can be a fantastic defender, and today he was a leader. He was very solid, won aerial and ground duels.

Ben Davies – 8

The Welshman’s most impressive display this season. His challenges were brilliant and he came close with a header in the second half. He certainly topped Lenglet today.

Ivan Perisic – 4

The Croatian was nothing special today and was particularly underwhelming. He struggled defensively, failed to get a handful of passes off. He could have had an assist if his ball to Kane was more accurate in the second half.

Midfielders:

Rodrigo Bentancur – 7

A solid performance today. He was on a tightrope after an early yellow and remained composed. Pressed well, made intelligent challenges and played incisive passes. It is a pleasure to watch.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – 8.5

Could have been man of the match from my standpoint, and was given that by Sky. Assisted Kane, made some brilliant interceptions and tackles and helped at both ends of the pitch. Hojbjerg needs to show this more often

Attackers:

Dejan Kulusevski – 7

Slightly frustrated by the Swede today. He had plenty of chances on the right but seemed to lack good decision-making today, which is one of his greater qualities. Solid, nonetheless.

Harry Kane – 9.5 (Man of the Match)

I am a sucker for storylines, and there is no greater storyline than scoring the winner against the champions to break such a record. He was very good, but probably not the best on the pitch. His greatness deserves this rating, and I don’t believe we should argue that.

Heung-Min Son – 7.5

After the Preston game, we wanted to see Son keep it up. Today was certainly better, despite the lack of goal involvement. He was intelligent on the ball, contributed to our counter-attacks and looked promising again.

Manager:

Cristian Stellini – 9

For his second game on the touchline (after Marseille), Stellini has shown some class. He was given the freedom on team selection and chose perfectly. He timed substitutions as well and kept the team strong mentally throughout the game.

A memorable evening in N17, and a great team performance. Can Spurs continue to win?
