The Masters: Rahm glorious at Augusta

The sun shone on the best course on Earth after a torrential Saturday at Augusta. Jon Rahm capitalised on Brooks Koepka’s sloppy Sunday to finish at -12 and claim his second major as he joined the greats to claim a green jacket.

Jon Rahm is undoubtedly the world’s greatest talent, and it cannot be questioned that he is deserving of his second major this afternoon. He overcame the trials and tribulations as early as on the first hole where a tricky four-putt saw him go two over.

Overcoming adversity is the true sign of a great sportsman, and Rahm was utterly ruthless on Thursday to reach -7. The Spaniard remained composed through the gains of Koepka and the torrential rain on Saturday to reach the promised land.

Jon Rahm is a Masters winner, and his great golf has been pure cinema, but at the theatre of Augusta the best on the planet reached his inevitable destiny. He is not finished here. He became the fourth Spaniard to reach glory in Georgia, but he may become the first from his homeland to complete the grand slam.

It was quite a weekend for LIV golfers, who were tipped to play poorly due to the format, which is less competitive and provides less golf, but on Sunday we saw some fantastic golf from their biggest names.

Most notably, Phil Mickelson who rolled back the years with a vintage display. He finished joint second with a stunning round of 65, the first man over 50 years old to do so. He hit 16/18 greens in regulation and proved his status.

Brooks Koepka will be devastated by missing out once again at Augusta. He had a remarkable first two days but was unable to have the stamina and consistency to challenge late on. His driving let him down in the showdown where he held a two shot lead, but to finish T2 will be massively disappointing. With how impressive his game was, he will be disappointed he is in an insignificant golf tour.

Patrick Reed was also in the mix on the final day as he finished T4 on -7.

Patrick Cantlay was a human centipede around Augusta today. Disappointingly slow, causing frustration for the likes of Hovland and Koepka. A time limit should be encouraged for what is quite simply unsporting behaviour.

Jordan Spieth had another Jordan Spieth round, but in glorious fashion this Sunday. He went six under par despite three bogeys. It is a shame that the 2015 winner was unable to just play a calm, simple round. It is an impossible ask, but it was fun to watch the flurry of birdies this afternoon.

Scottie Scheffler will spend the next few weeks aggressively trying to improve his putting. He was one of the best this weekend in terms of tee-to-green, but one of the worst on the greens. If his game was complete, he may have been there to defend this weekend.

The shot of the tournament could go to anyone, but the dopamine of all fans certainly was raised after Sahith Theegala’s recreation of Tiger’s colossal, unforgettable shot in 2005 from the exact same place, in the exact same line.

A final touch on Tiger Woods. It was extremely sad to see one of golfing’s greatest struggle to walk on Saturday evening. The conditions did not help, but no one would blame Woods for finishing it there. Making the cut was a superb effort, but it is difficult to watch him struggle to even complete 36 holes at the moment.

However, the crown jewel of the golf world heads on Rahm’s shoulders. A green jacket for the world’s best golfer sounds appropriate as ever.
