What positions need addressing at Tottenham Hotspur this summer?

Daniel Madgin

There will be a relatively large clear-out in North London this summer, with plenty of players who have stayed at Tottenham short-term and long-term departing the club. Therefore, Spurs will have to address vacant positions which will need improvement ahead of the new season. Those positions, along with potential targets will be reviewed.

Goalkeeper

With the departure of Hugo Lloris appearing certain this summer after an 11-year stint at Spurs, the current captain will need replacing – and the goalkeeper market is particularly sparce, and identifying, luring, and signing a good keeper will not be a simple job, but Spurs will already have a few targets with Lloris’ departure in mind.

David Raya has been the most hotly mentioned, but it is imperative that Tottenham secure European football of some description heading into next season in order to tempt Raya, who has hinted that he wants to play in Europe several times this season.

Other options include Valencia’s goalkeeper Giorgio Mamardashvili, Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez, and Nantes’ Alban Lafont.

Centre Back

You could easily argue that Tottenham need to sign two defenders this summer, but the profile of centre back they need is a tall, dominant, commanding and composed figure which they lost when both Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen had. This defender needs to be able to connect well with Cristian Romero, who sometimes needs some guidance.

The top option must be Manchester City outcast Aymeric Laporte. He is a third choice at best under Pep Guardiola, neither too old or too young and importantly left-footed, and good on the ball. This probably will be affordable for Daniel Levy, and undoubtedly Laporte would be keen for regular action.

Other good options include Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, Villarreal’s Pau Torres and Roma’s Ibañez. Spurs are certainly not short of options in this area.

Left Back

It is slightly bizarre to say Spurs need a left back at the club considering the club currently has Ivan Perisic and Ryan Sessegnon currently at the club, and Sergio Reguilon to return alongside new signing Destiny Udogie, but a left back who can defend must be considered if Spurs want to play a four-at-the-back. Therefore, a player who could play both in defence and left back must be considered, such as the profile of Ben Davies.

The top option here would be Brighton’s Pervis Estupiñán, who has been scintillating for Brighton this season. With Brighton already offloading plenty of players this summer, it appears unlikely that they will let their Ecuadorian left back go, but nonetheless it would be a perfect signing for Spurs.

Other players Spurs could sign include Matheus Reis, Castello Lukeba and Piero Hincapie, all of which are more adept to playing centre back but could certainly play left-back successfully.

Attacking Midfield

Spurs have needed a creative outlet ever since Christian Eriksen left for Inter Milan in 2020. This summer, that issue must be resolved, whether they sign a deep-lying playmaker or a more advanced creative outlet.

James Maddison is the blatant first pick with Leicester set to be relegated as soon as this weekend in the Premier League. The attacking midfielder could be purchased on a discount, and with 9 Premier League assists and 10 Premier League goals this season, the attacking midfielder will certainly add productivity to Tottenham.

Bristol City’s Alex Scott is also an option, despite top-flight experience. Lee Kang-In has been recently linked, and Chelsea’s Mason Mount could be an option if Chelsea look to offload him.

Attackers

In this position it is all up in the air, and unpredictable exactly what Tottenham will need, so with that in mind this list combines wingers and strikers. The Harry Kane leaving talk has become quiet for now, but a bid for him from Manchester United’s potential new owners would be unsurprising, which would therefore trigger Spurs into action in the market for a centre forward.

The top option would be Gonçalo Ramos, who had a fantastic World Cup with Portugal. The striker is certainly waiting his ‘big move’. Lois Openda of RC Lens, who currently sit second in Ligue 1, would also be a feasible option. The Belgian attacker has 19 goals this season. Gift Orban was linked today, but is certainly inexperienced.

For wingers, out of contract Wilfred Zaha would guarantee instant quality, but if that is not possible, Armand Lauriente at Sassuolo is having an impressive season.

If Spurs get their top targets in each of these positions and avoid the injury woes which have been sustained this season, they will surely be armed to charge for the top four once again.
