Liverpool are miles away from the top of the Premier League, having a nightmare of a start to the Premier League season under Jurgen Klopp and the problems are massive, and a solution may include some pain.

After the thrilling conclusion to the 2021/22 Premier League season, where Liverpool were 10 minutes away from securing the domestic treble, including a Champions League final they were unable to win against Real Madrid, everything was rosy was on Merseyside, but the collapse of the team has many explanations these seasons, and a quick fix looks unlikely due to many different problems at the club right now. It's quite shocking to see the downfall of Liverpool so quickly after five or so years dominance with Manchester City so quickly, but a disaster summer transfer window certainly triggered some of the problems which they are facing now.
Firstly, losing Sadio Mane was more hurtful than Liverpool fans and Jurgen Klopp could imagine. His pressing, mentality and obviously, his prolific goal scoring made him one of Liverpool’s top dangermen, and particularly when Mohammed Salah would not step up for the reds, Mane would. Now, Liverpool do not have Luis Diaz due to his injury at the Emirates, who while being impressive to watch does not have the clutch factor which Mane had, and Darwin Nunez, who is yet to adapt to the Premier League, meanwhile Salah’s poor 2022 has continued into the new season, meaning attacking output has not been as efficient for them. This is just a minor problem if you are comparing to the others at the club.

The club’s failure to sign a competent midfielder has had a detrimental effect on the rest of the team and Jurgen Klopp’s setup. As it’s been evident, Liverpool play a massively high block, utilising the ability of their world class fullbacks attacking competencies, but this heavily relies on midfielders which can dispossess opposition and retain possession for the reds. Thiago’s constant injuries and Fabinho and Henderson’s decline in form has meant Liverpool have been increasingly reliant on youth such as Harvey Elliot and Fabio Carvalho, who evidently are not ready to play at an elite level consistently and their inexperience has cost Liverpool. Overall, this has meant less possession in games for Liverpool, giving the opposition greater chances to get in behind.
Any honest Liverpool fan would admit Trent Alexander-Arnold has never been a good defender, and opposition in the Premier League such as Brighton and Arsenal exploiting his side with tricky wingers to exploit the defensive weaknesses of the full back, which has seen Liverpool leak more goals than ever this season, including 6 in the last 2 games.

Liverpool desperately needs a huge amount of investment in the January to even have a chance of top 4 with the increasing quality of the other 5 teams making up the traditional top six. The team has lost it’s edge, and if results continue to decline, a new manager may even be needed. The dominant teams of the recent era have needed rebuilds, changes and they are inevitably painful but necessary, such of what we have seen at Manchester City, who sold Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus who had not yet reached their expiry date, but Pep Guardiola knew they were not 100% invested in his project, so they were sold, and reinvestment has been made for the future.
Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool did not foresee the future problems of this squad, which is undeniably talented, and now we are seeing the end of an era at Anfield with this Liverpool squad, and changes are needed immediately – or it could become a disaster.
